Merced

Situated in the Central Valley of California, Merced is a small, close-knit community that’s quickly on the rise. The city is the county seat of Merced County. It is home to around 83,000 people. Merced can be accessed via Highway 140, Highway 59, and Highway 99 (which passes right through the city.) If you want to live in a beautiful community that has a small town feel but is just close enough to the big city, check out the real estate for sale in Merced.

Incorporated in 1889, Merced gets its name from Nuestra Señora de la Merced, which is Spanish for “Our Lady of Mercy.” In 1872, the Central Pacific Railroad (a rail company chartered by Congress) used the area as the main location for the processing and shipping of agricultural goods in Merced County. Other industries have since entered the economy such as warehousing and distribution, printing, packaging, and fiberglass boat building.

As one of the fastest-growing cities in California, Merced has a variety of house and property listings to consider. To oversee its continuous progress, the city utilizes a council-manager system of local government, which puts elected officials as the legislative body and appointed managers as the chief executive.
