Merced County welcomed its first retail cannabis shop last September 28, 2019. According to owner Michael O’Leary, almost 200 people visited Medallion Wellness in Atwater within two hours since it first opened its doors to the public.
The new branch in Atwater is O’Leary’s second store. He opened his first shop in Modesto back in 2016, and is preparing to open another one in Merced on 16th Street on January 2020.
A more convenient location for Atwater residents
For Atwater locals, the arrival of the first cannabis retail store in their area means they won’t need to drive all the way to Ceres and Modesto.
Located just off Highway 99 at 341 Business Park Way, Medallion Wellness features a wide variety of products such as pre-rolled joints, flowers, edibles, beverages, waxes, vape cartridges and pens, and more.
O’Leary says his initial plan was to open several cannabis shops in Atwater, Merced, Modesto, Turlock, and Fresno in the near future. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out as planned in Turlock, so he went ahead with the opening of new shops in Atwater and Merced.
A one-stop cannabis retail shop
Customers visiting Medallion Wellness will enter through a lobby, where they’ll be required to sign in. Getting a membership at the shop is needed before you can shop at Medallion Wellness.
Memberships are completely free of charge, but to get one, you will need to provide a copy of a valid I.D. that shows you are at least 21 years of age.
Medallion Wellness features more than 130 strains of marijuana flowers, something O’Leary is very proud of since it can be challenging to get that many different strains, especially during this time of the year.
Regular store hours at Medallion Wellness are from 10am to 7am daily. The store will also start home delivery of items soon.

More shops to open in Atwater
More dispensaries could soon pop up in Atwater following the opening of Medallion Wellness.
While council members originally voted on permitting only two dispensaries in the city, additional shops could soon be on the way. In a three to two vote in 2018, Atwater council members voted against limiting the number of cannabis dispensaries allowed in the city.
According to city manager Lori Waterman, Atwater will have designated industrial areas for cannabis, which will be the only areas where dispensaries
will be allowed to operate.
