Humble Beginnings as a Railroad Stop

Ever wonder how Modesto came around? It first originated as a little train stop. The railroad stopped here when traveling between the surrounding big metros of Sacramento and Los Angeles. Who would have guessed?

Today, it’s grown into much more than just an in-between point. Modesto is an affluent and illustrious city that offers the very best of the laid back California lifestyle for guests and residents alike.

Why Call It Modesto?

If you’re familiar with the Spanish language, you’ve likely noticed that Modesto translates into ‘modest’. But why name a city this?

It’s actually a bit of a funny historical tale. The man who originally developed Modesto was named William C. Ralston. In efforts to show their thanks and honor his investment, the townspeople insisted on naming the town after him, meaning it would have been called Ralston.

However, William C. Ralston wasn’t interested in the honorifics and kindly rejected their pleas. He told them he was ‘muy modesto’, meaning he was too modest. Hearing the word modesto, everyone decided to name the town Modesto.
