Planting Schedule for Vegetables in Merced, CA: A Guide

We’re sure that most people would agree that one of the best things about real estate for sale in Merced CA is that most of the properties have a large plot – ideal for those who enjoy a spot of gardening and want to create a beautiful outdoor space of their own. We also think that you’d find something suited to your needs when looking for Chowchilla real estate, as houses here are often quite diverse.

Once we’ve helped you to find your ideal Merced country real estate, you might want to start a vegetable garden. Here’s a planting strategy to help you find out when the best times are to plant your veggies.

When is the growing season?

On average, the frost-free growing season begins at the end of March and ends on the 4th of November, so in general you’ll have a whole 220 days. Here’s a little guide for what to plant and when during spring and fall:

Spring

There are plenty of crops that can be grown during the springtime – and while you’ll often have to prepare to plant them before the season actually starts, we’re certain that you’ll be able to have a garden full of delicious produce when the time comes to harvest them.

In general, it’s best to start planting your cole crops indoors around the 20th of January and transplant them to your garden near the 10th of March. A few examples of cole crops are Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. Other vegetables that you might want to plant indoors at a similar time are peppers and tomatoes – and these should be planted outside when there’s no more frost.

Onions, peas, and potatoes should be planted toward the end of January (although if the ground is still frozen, we’d suggest that you wait until it thaws). Summer vegetables and fruits like watermelons, beans, and pumpkins should often be planted toward the end of March. If you find that the soil has thawed but is still cold, wait until it reaches warmer temperatures (generally near 60° F).

Fall

Most will find that gardening during this season isn’t quite as easy as it is during spring – mainly because you’ll have to hope your crops will mature in time for you to harvest them before winter comes around.

Toward the end of August, you can directly seed cole crops, although it might be better to start them indoors at the beginning of July and then transplant them to the garden halfway through August. You’ll often have to give plants like eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes around 100 days to harvest; they should aim to be transplanted into the ground toward the end of July.

In general, you can sow peas directly into the ground on the 25th of August. Summer plants are often best to be planted directly into outdoor soil near the 20th of July. The best time to plant garlic is in fall, often around the 20th of September – although keep in mind that garlic dates vary greatly in different parts of the US.
