Delta
Catch largemouth bass and striped bass in the Delta in Stockton, a popular spot with anglers. The water is clear, so anglers recommend using bright colored bait. On windy days, they recommend using spinnerbait to bring in the catch.
The southern portion of the Delta is teeming with undersized striped bass, though some folks have reported catching bass as long as 23 to 25 inches in the Brookside Road area.
Anglers note that salmon has been harder to catch in recent years, and the ones who have been able to reel in some salmon have reported doing so in Stockton’s Walnut Grove area.
Lake San Pedro
The lake is teeming with rainbow trout and spotted bass, with the latter species usually feeding on shad in big schools across the shelves of the shoreline. There are shallow and deep spots in the lake, with trout often lurking in the more extreme depths.
You can launch your boat from the marina or the Flemings Meadow ramp.
There is a speed limit of five miles per hour (mph) speed limit from the Blue Oaks Recreation Area ramp all the way to the Buoy Line at Fleming Bay.
McClure Reservoir
Nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Santa Fe, this reservoir is filled with brown trout, rainbow trout, largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. It received one of the largest trout plants in California history, with over 150,000 pounds of brook and rainbow trout released into the reservoir as recently as July 2019. These include trophy-sized trout weighing as much as 18 pounds.
Bass has reportedly been more difficult to catch in recent years, and the ones who have caught bass claimed they can only be caught 60 feet into the reservoir.
McSwain Reservoir
Located in Lake McSwain Recreational Area, the reservoir was stocked with about 1,500 pounds of trout in 2017, some of which were trophy-sized fish weighing three pounds or heavier. The lake is known as an excellent fishing spot for brown and rainbow trout.
You’ll also find campsites in the recreational area in case you want to spend the whole weekend fishing for trout. Some of the campsites in A-Loop have electric and water hook-ups though they are some distance from the water.
However, campers recommend sites A-6 and A-7 in the A-Loop for anglers who want to stay closer to the reservoir, although these sites have no hook-ups save for a water tap.
Millerton Lake
Deep in Millerton Lake Recreational Area, you’ll find this pristine body of water containing bluegill, crappie, catfish, rainbow trout, brown trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, and striped bass. There is a 12-inch size limit for bass.
The main body of the lake is usually crowded with boats and water skis so anglers recommend going to the San Joaquin River, an arm of the lake, where water skiing is prohibited. Anglers report catching bluegill, catfish, trout, and crappie along the banks and in the shallows in the coves. They tend to catch more bass in the rocky areas of the lake.
